Bought a new LT160 42C w/7 bu bagger w/a Kohler engine. Does anyone know why makers keep switching out engine makes? I've heard & read that, compared to a Briggs & Stratton, Kohler is 2nd best. Some deluxe riders will put in a Kohler, and then put a B & S in their "Budget" line. Go figure. Any thoughts?

Given the choice I'd always pick Kohler over B&S. Briggs have improved some and Kohler has probably declined but I still prefer Kohler over Briggs.

We sell four hundred plus small engines in those catagories you mentioned per year new. Brand names include Honda, Briggs, Kohler,Tecumseh and Kawasaki. I don't know that anyone of those engines are having more or less problems than the other. They are often bid for the model year or longer for a particuliar unit do to it's size, starting ability, durability and last but not least it's cost. There are ones better suited(my opinion) for one application than the other but they all can work. After all you cannot install a $800.00 engine in a tractor to sell for $999.95,or can you? ....

Honda and Kawasaki are #1 and #1a, Kohler's are next at #2,Used to be #1 by far but, lost it . Briggs and Stratton and Tecumseh are a distant third. Look at the small engines in top of the line industial pumps, generators and for that matter lawn care equipment. that Kohler should treat you very well, if you treat it well. I had a 17hp kohler in a 1971 Bolens garden tractor that my dad bought new. We junked that thing in 1988, because of the transmission not the engine, and it was never rebuilt. good luck with your little deere. ....
